Tyler was born in the small town of Grenville-sur-la Rouge, Quebec, where he played competitively at the AA and AAA level before transferring over to Ontario to continue to play Tier 2 Junior A and Junior C. After playing competitively for 20 years, he took his on ice experience and reconstructed it into a coaching role with the Ottawa Senators Hockey Programs.
