The Ottawa Senators® Hockey Programs are dedicated to continuing to provide the local hockey community with skill development programs that will compliment each player. It is for this exact reason that we have decided to introduce a select set of new specialty clinics to our youth hockey program lineup for the Summer of 2024. Join our professionally-trained development staff on the ice for sessions that are specifically designed to improve individual skills that all participants need to take their game to the next level. Each week will focus on new skills/techniques taught to participants. Register for all 6 weeks or drop in on the session of your choice! Please see below for when specific sessions will be offered.

BELL Sensplex: Competitive Specialty Clinics

Skill Requirements:This Program is restricted to Competitive players ONLY. Participants must have played on a Hockey Canada sanctioned competitive team in the 2023-2024 minor hockey season. Unless approved by a Ottawa Senators Hockey programs employee, registrants not adhering to the skill requirement may be screened out of the program

Program Descriptions:

Dominant Defender: Offered on July 8 and Aug 12 at 7:00pm

Develop into a dominant defender with this program designed specifically for defensemen! This specialty session will increase the poise and comfortability of a defenseman through on ice instruction tailored toward giving elite tips and suggestions to improve a defenseman’s game. Instruction will be delivered in both small group and full ice settings. High-repetition station work, small area games and end-zone (defensive and offensive) game-situational drills will all be utilized throughout the program. The following are the primary skills that will be focused on:

  • Key Skills of backwards skating (quick starts, crossunders and speed control)
  • Effectively using pivots, transitions, lateral mobility, and evasive maneuvers at game speed
  • Offensive and defensive retrievals and using deception when retrieving
  • Getting off the walls fast
  • Importance of establishing mid-ice to improve passing & shot angles
  • Increasing situational awareness and awareness when making plays under pressure (Using Shoulder checks, head on a swivel)
  • Timing / Maintaining footspeed

Advanced Scoring: Offered on July 15 and Aug 19 at 7:00pm

Scoring goals only becomes more difficult as you progress through the ranks. Most goals are scored within the blue paint or within small windows in the slot. This session will focus on increasing scoring IQ close to the net, adjusting positioning for rebounds, and working on quick release shooting. The following are the primary skills that will be focused on:

– Scoring in-tight to the net both above and below the goal line
Wraparounds
– Quick release shooting in the slot
– Understanding reads / goalie positioning
– Adjusting body & stick positioning when recovering rebounds
– Creating space around the net to increase scoring chances
– Locating and settling bouncing pucks

Angling & Stick Checking: Offered on July 22 at 7:00pm

No matter what level of hockey you play, one of the greatest skills to perfect is angling. Being able to angle and separate player from puck, can be the difference between you and another player, making the higher levels. The following are the primary skills that will be focused on:

– Proper angling techniques & purpose of angling
– Matching the speed of the puck carrier
– Understanding closing the gap and limiting time and space
– Driving through the hands and stick for separation

Creating Time & Space: Offered on July 29 at 7pm

This program focuses on giving skaters the tools to create their own time and space across all areas of the ice. The following are the primary skills that will be focused on:

  • Quick cutbacks along the boards and in the corners
  • Calculated delays to deceive defenders
  • Protecting the puck in tight spaces and making decisions under pressure.

Skaters will do these skills at a game like pace to increase their recognition of these opportunities come game time.
