Speciality Clinics
The Ottawa Senators® Hockey Programs are dedicated to continuing to provide the local hockey community with skill development programs that will compliment each player. It is for this exact reason that we have decided to introduce a select set of new specialty clinics to our youth hockey program lineup for the Fall and Winter. Join our professionally-trained development staff on the ice for sessions that are specifically designed to improve individual skills that all participants need to take their game to the next level.

RECREATIONAL SPECIALTY CLINICS
Incorporating a variety of diverse clinics designed to address individual aspects within a player’s game. Our recreational specialty clinics cover everything from defensive minded strategy to exploring new ways for scoring around the net and much more! Every week will be focused on a developing a different skill set and will be broken down as follows…
- Sunday, January 8*, 15, 22*, February 5, 12, 19, 26*, March 5*, 12, April 2, 9, 16

- Jan 8th session will start at 3pm
- Jan 22nd session will start at 3pm
- Feb 26th session will start at 3pm

Week 1 (Jan 8*, Feb 12 & Mar 12): Essential Defensive Skills – CLICK HERE FOR DROP INS
- The ability for a defenseman or defensive forward to retrieve pucks, control the puck while skating backwards, and always shooting with a purpose, is integral for their position. This specialty session will increase the players comfortability with these skills and provide elite tips and suggestions to improve their overall defensive game. The following are the primary skills that will be focused on:
- Offensive and defensive retrievals
- Getting off the walls fast
- Situational awareness when retrieving (Shoulder checks, head on a swivel)
- Timing / Maintaining footspeed
- Shooting with eyes up and with a purpose
- Skating backwards while controlling a puck
Week 2 (Jan 15, Feb 19 & Apr 2): In-tight Scoring – CLICK HERE FOR DROP INS
- Scoring goals only becomes more difficult as you progress through the ranks. Most goals are scored within the blue paint or within small windows in the slot. This session will focus on increasing scoring IQ close to the net, adjusting positioning for rebounds, and working on quick release shooting. The following are the primary skills that will be focused on:
- Scoring in-tight to the net
- Both above and below the goal line
- Wraparounds
- Quick release shooting in the slot
- Understanding reads / goalie positioning
- Adjusting body & stick positioning when recovering rebounds
- Creating space around the net to increase scoring chances
- Locating and settling bouncing pucks
Week 3 (Jan 22*, Feb 26* & Apr 9): Angling/Stick Checking – CLICK HERE FOR DROP INS
- No matter what level of hockey you play, one of the greatest skills to perfect is angling. Being able to angle and separate player from puck, can be the difference between you and another player, making the higher levels. The following are the primary skills that will be focused on:
- Proper angling techniques & purpose of angling
- Matching the speed of the puck carrier
- Understanding closing the gap and limiting time and space
- Driving through the hands and stick for separation
Week 4 (Feb 5, Mar 5* & Apr 16): Creating Time & Space – CLICK HERE FOR DROP INS
- This program focuses on giving skaters the tools to create their own time and space by working on cutbacks, delays, and protecting the puck in tight spaces. Skaters will do this at a game like pace to increase their recognition of these opportunities come game time.
NOTE: After the 4-week rotation, clinics will repeat but build on the skills learned from the previous session.

COMPETITIVE SPECIALTY CLINICS
If you’re looking to become a more complete and well-rounded player, the Ottawa Senators Hockey programs are pleased to release our second installation of our Competitive Specialty Clinics. Every week will be focused on a developing a different skill set and will be broken down as follows…
- Monday, January 16, 23, 30, February 6, 13, 27, March 6, 20, 27, April 3
Week 1 (Jan 16, Feb 13 & Mar 27): Defensive Retrievals – CLICK HERE FOR DROP INS
The ability for a defenseman or defensive forward to retrieve pucks is an integral skill for their position. This specialty session will increase the comfortability and provide elite tips and suggestions to improve this aspect of a player’s game. The following are the primary skills that will be focused on:

- Importance of establishing mid-ice to improve passing & shot angles
- Situational awareness when retrieving (shoulder checks, head on a swivel)
- Deception when retrieving
- Timing and maintaining footspeed
Week 2 (Jan 23, Feb 27, Apr 3): Advanced Scoring – CLICK HERE FOR DROP INS
- Scoring goals only becomes more difficult as you progress through the ranks. This session will focus on increasing scoring IQ close to the net, adjusting positioning for rebounds, and creating space for yourself when in prime scoring areas. The following are the primary skills that will be focused on:
- Scoring in-tight to the net
- Both above and below the goal line
- Wraparounds
- Understanding reads / goalie positioning
- Adjusting body & stick positioning when recovering rebounds
- Creating space around the net to increase scoring chances
- Locating and settling bouncing pucks
Week 3 (Jan 30 & Mar 6): Angling/Stick Checking – CLICK HERE FOR DROP INS

- This program builds upon the wildly successful and sold-out Ultra-Speed summer hockey camp. It will challenge players to perform skills and make decisions at ultra-high speeds to help them react to ever-changing game conditions each shift.
NOTE: After the 4-week rotation, clinics will repeat but build on the skills learned from the previous session.
